To New Beginnings

The local tavern-inn is a great meeting hall that takes a nice chunk of the village's east side up. To those who like or get used to the somewhat dank feel of the place, this is a second home, if not a first, replete with plenty of space, good food, good drinks, cozy rooms, and a village full of mostly kind people.

All assassins from your world are mages, then?

‾▿‾Nadia couldn't help but ask. Tori's eyes narrowed into an 'oh, great' look. With connections like 'I'm an assassin, so of course I'm a mage," she wondered if the rest of his reasoning was going to be helpful for this realm. It would seem as though the Soluna System and Seinvocc are quite a bit more similar than either one is to Crevasseus' home.‾▿‾

"Interesting. Then, the main issue seems to be handling groups,"

Joma remarked. She tried to time her statement so that she wasn't interrupting Crevasseus' answer to Nadia's question.

"I'm a Ralgoon, magic is in my blood. Assassinating was just a way to make a living. Have you never encountered a Ralgoon before?

He was sure that by the way his skin looked, as far as he could tell from the last time he actually saw it, they would've been at least vaguely familiar with his race. Right? Then again, these women fly.

I guess that the word, "ralgoon," is used for different things between our dimensions, 'cause you look nothing like a ralgoon.

‾▿‾Both to state consensus with Nadia and to answer Joma, Tori looked toward Joma as she stated,‾▿‾

I guess so. Crevasseus, you don't have much for dealing with groups of enemies, do you?

The mercenary clan all sat pretty quietly. The people at the table to the left were still carrying on some small talk, but those who were within the immediate vicinity just listened and thought. Joma tapped her chin with a thoughtful gaze. Rin pulled some crystals out of her satchel and looked them over.

"I'm a half warlock, half lizardfolk," he explained looking toward Nadia

He shifted his head to face the other girl.

Yeah, not the same.

‾▿‾This was only the second time that they've heard the word, "warlock," used as though it was a race. It sounded funny that way. Nadia wondered if this was the same "warlock" race that Tori and she had heard of one time. Tori thought that it probably wasn't. They both looked at each other and shrugged.‾▿‾

"I see. Oftentimes, people will hire mercenaries that support their strong points, mostly ignoring the weaknesses, when they set out for a certain task, such as a dungeon raid or mission in which they know what they're going to be dealing with. For simply assuring safe travel, though, we like to ask what we can help with to make a more well-rounded party. Given your needs, here is my assessment: Mineron and/or Na'gomn would be effective because they can draw aggro, but their mobility would be a hindrance. One of them to the Atypical Institution is twenty dollars. Rin has some tricks that would help to manage groups via position control, area attacks, and stall tactics. She's forty. Obediah is also forty, and he'd be good with survival with some area attacks. He also has a few abilities that are specifically designed for drawing aggro. He's not much faster than the defenders, though. I'm not sure how much you would have to travel on foot. Mayela and I each cost fifty and are talented in many subjects. We have other members in the clan that you may consider, but the earliest that we're expecting any to return is going to be six or seven hours from now."

Joma pointed around again as she mentioned names, in case the ladies didn't remember. Then, she recalled that Crevasseus was in the restroom at the first go-around, so she reiterated,

"Crevasseus, Mineron and Na'gomn are the bangaa defenders to your left, they're sitting with a viera elementalist by the name of Bjona, and we're sitting with a beorc paladin named Obediah, a hume gladiator named Eliyah, and a drakeward named Mayela. I'm a sphinx who specializes in anima magic tomes, blunt weaponry, and subspace manipulation."

"Pleasure to meet you all."

Crevasseus counted out 100 silver dollars silently.

"What do you ladies think?"

‾▿‾Tori let her genius friend do the talking, electing to just cross her arms and await a decision.‾▿‾

Well, as far as I know, we're not in any hurry. No offense to the present company, but it can't hurt to wait for a wider selection, right? Is there some reason why we should leave soon, and how long do you think we would have to wait to see the whole clan?

"Right. No, not at all! I just didn't know whether you were in any hurry or not. Well, after the one that I mentioned, we should receive a party of three within an hour, then a couple just after dusk, about four hours later. The other three should trickle in at random points tomorrow, though I wouldn't be surprised if one or two took longer. We are open to more than simple 'point A to point B' escort assignments, you see, and two of them had to take some time for personal training. After that, you will have seen all of us except the two that are on vacation."

Crevasseus silently slid all but 10 of the coins back into his coin-pouch.

"In that case how much is a beer here? I haven't had a beer in thirty-eight years."

On that note, we have lodging covered, and we can hunt, but, out of curiosity, what is the cost of living, here? How much does it cost for a body to lodge, eat, and drink in this village?

"That depends on what kind of beer you want. You'll have to ask the bartender; I only take Erin Von Nihil wine. That, too, depends on what you want. Food can cost dimes or hundreds, depending on the quality that you seek. Don't worry: even when you purchase the cheapest stuff available, people will say something before you poison yourself. Lodging is mostly cheap. If you're friendly enough, maybe someone will take you in for a night. Barring that, most people will let you stay for about twenty dollars, less if you're willing to work a bit, and the tavern has cozy rooms upstairs for thirty-five."

"Oh, by the way, Jared and I are due for some alone time, so I'll be using that voucher for a free night, here."

"Ah, good. That will work out nicely for Minnan when he gets back."

Crevasseus stood and turned around.

"Would someone be so kind as to point me in the right direction?"

He held the coins in his right hand and The Fellsgot in his left.

I bet the barkeep knows of someone that could fix my vision.
